Approved use: what the FDA decision covers

An approval answers a specific question about a specific medicine.

The US Food and Drug Administration, called FDA in this guide, reviews medicines for particular uses.

As of September 28, 2026, tesamorelin is approved for excess abdominal fat in adults with HIV and lipodystrophy, a change in body fat.

Understand what approval covers

The label excludes weight-loss management as a use for tesamorelin.

It also says the long-term effects on blood vessels and the heart are not established.

Ask the doctor to explain both the proposed benefit and the limits. Hearing “approved” is the start of that discussion.

Approval belongs to the product

An FDA registration records a business on the agency’s list. That listing does not mean its medicines are approved, and the FDA does not approve doctors’ offices.

If a service uses those terms, ask which exact product and use it means. Keep that written answer with your visit notes.

Ask for confirmation of the current product, rules and costs before deciding on care.
